Types of Fair Folk
Most humans have the misconception that Faeries are small winged children who live in flowers and flit about in sunlit fields and forests. They couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, there are faeries who resemble these sprites of human fancy, but the majority of the inhabitants of the Twilight Realms are grander, more ethereal, and far more dangerous. There are several different breeds of Good People but the population of the Irish Court Under the Hill is made primarily of five breeds: The Sidhe, Selkies, Pucks, Flora Faeries, and Changelings.
The Sidhe
(pronounces Shee) are the kings and queens of Faery, who hold their courts under the hills of Ireland, where they live much as the aristocracy of any other race does. They feast, they dance, they have harpers and minstrels and so on. The Sidhe are tall, slender , graceful and posses an unearthly beauty. Selkies
also know as Merrows, are the Irish equivalent of merfolk, Faeries of the water. While in the water they take the form of seals, but upon reaching the shore they can shed their seal skins and take on a human or Faery form. If a Selkie loses her or his skin she or he may not return to the sea until they find it or grow a new one, which is an incredibly long and painful process, most Selkies choose to make their lives on land or Under the Hill rather than under go it.Pucks
also known sometimes as Pookas are Trickster Faeries essentially. They can have any number of forms as they are shape shifters, though most tend to adopt only an animal form in addition to their human and Faery visages. Though sometimes more helpful to humans than other Faeries, they would much rather tie shoelaces together than untie knots in a washing line. A Puck will play a trick on any one, regardless of the consequences sometimes. Flora Faeries
are the closest to the common human idea of Faeries, thought not childlike this type of Faery is small, with large insect wings in their Faery form. They are in essence the spirits and guardians of plants, not every plant has a Faery, but every Flora Faery has a plant. Though generally associated with flowering plants Flora Faeries are not limited to them, they can be spirits of trees, herbs, and shrubbery, even weeds. Changelings
are not Faeries at all, really. They are humans who were stolen by Faeries as infants and raised Under the Hill. Though Human in blood and nature these children take on the life span, behaviors, and in some cases the appearance of the Faeries they live with. They will not grow wings, nor will they have the shape changing capabilities possessed by the Fair Folk, but their basic feature tend to be elfin at the least.
